Toshiba launches world’s first RoHS compliant PC
Environmental leadership and exclusive security features provide the ultimate in carefree mobile computing

Markham, ON (September 19, 2005) - Toshiba of Canada Information Systems Group (Toshiba ISG) today introduced the Tecra S3 and Tecra M3, the latest additions to the powerful Tecra line of commercial notebook computers. The Tecra S3 is believed to be the first PC in the world to fully comply with the new environmental RoHS* regulations set forth by the European Parliament, an achievement that comes well in advance of the July 1, 2006 compliance deadline.

The introduction of the Tecra S3 is the latest in a long line of initiatives that speak to Toshiba’s role as an industry leader in environmental awareness and protection. In 1998, Toshiba launched the first halogen-antimony free PCB notebook PC. It was also one of the first to do away with the use of lead-based solder and is now the first to fully comply with the new, stringent RoHS Regulations. Beginning with the Tecra S3, all newly developed notebook computers from Toshiba will comply with these environmental directives.

“Toshiba’s implementation of the new RoHS regulations well ahead of the compliance deadline speaks to our product design leadership and our ongoing commitment to the environment,” says Todd Smith, Director - Product Marketing, Toshiba ISG. “Toshiba Corporation is extremely proud of the many R&D initiatives that we undertake in order to bring leading edge and environmentally friendly notebook computers to our customers.”

Toshiba’s new Tecra commercial notebook computers also feature the latest in safety and security technology with the addition of Toshiba’s EasyGuard package. The Tecra M3 is the first unit to come equipped with an exclusive VACF (Viewing Angle Control Filter) LCD. This innovative security feature consists of a special technology that displays a chess board-like pattern on the screen in order to prevent side viewing even in the most open or busy areas. This is an ideal security feature for business travelers working on airplanes, airports or other public areas and ensures that only the user can see the information on the screen.

The Tecra S3 is also equipped with a new Anti-Theft Protection Timer feature that allows users to set up a timer-activated BIOS password that will prevent unauthorized system access in the event of theft. Both the Tecra S3 and Tecra M3 are equipped with two more unique EasyGuard features:

• ConfigFree™ – This one button feature is ideal for non-technical users. It automatically locates and connects to wired and wireless networks and Bluetooth™ devices and captures a complete set of location settings. This latest version of ConfigFree can automatically switch between wired and non-wired environments providing greater ease of use for non technical users.

• Raid Technology – When an error is detected during the back up process, Toshiba’s unique RAID Technology can, in most circumstances, replace the corrupted data by fixing it with data saved on the second drive.

“Travelling professionals today demand the absolute best in security and reliability. They want to know that they can access their information quickly and easily and that the information will be safe. That’s what EasyGuard is all about,” says Mini Saluja, Product manager, Toshiba ISG.

*About RoHS
RoHS is an environmental regulation set forth by the European Parliament with the expectation to drive a worldwide movement. This regulation goes into effect on July 1, 2006. Its goal is to dramatically reduce the use of lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium and both polybrominated biphenyl (PBB) and polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) flame retardants in the production of new electrical and electronic equipment. Manufacturers will need to ensure that their products and components comply with the requirements of the RoHS regulations in order to be allowed on the market.
