Toshiba Celebrates 20 Years in the Portable PC Market with Ultra Slim and Ultra Small Notebook PCs
Sleek and stylized anniversary edition, extended battery life, smaller dimensions designed to give Canadians more mobile computing options

Markham, ON (April 27, 2005) - Toshiba of Canada Information Systems Group (Toshiba ISG) today announced that it is marking 20 years of innovation and leadership in portable personal computing with the launch of three series of 20th anniversary notebook PCs. The Portégé™ R200, Portégé™ R200 Special Anniversary Edition and the Libretto™ – a full featured mini-notebook PC that can be held on the palm of one hand offer enhanced image quality derived from Toshiba’s “Qosmio” AV-PCs.

All three new systems continue Toshiba’s 20 year tradition of pioneering key advances and differentiated technologies in portable computing. These new systems and historical portable computers from the past 20 years will be showcased at a media event in Toronto on April 27, 2005.

Portégé R200 and Portégé R200 Special Anniversary Edition
The Portégé R200 and Portégé R200 Special Anniversary Edition are some of Canada’s thinnest and lightest notebook computers. Corporate customers can enjoy superior performance in a sleek and streamlined, single spindle, 12-inch LCD display, 2.7 lbs portable computer. In addition to superior style and EasyGuard features, this system is among the first Toshiba notebook computers to feature integrated fingerprint reader for superior security. The Portégé R200 incorporates an array of beneficial features including the Intel Pentium M Processor 753, 1.8-inch 60GB hard drive, 512 MB DDR2 400MHz memory and Atheros 802.11b/g wireless LAN card. The Portégé R200 Special Anniversary Edition features all the slim and stylish design of the Portégé R200 but comes with a metallic sliver keyboard. The Portégé R200 has a suggested list price (SLP) of $2,699 and the Portégé R200 Special Anniversary edition has an SLP of $2699.

Libretto™ U100
The Libretto U100 is the full-feature mini-notebook PC that can be held in the palm of your hand. Weighing 2lbs and featuring a 7.2-inch LCD screen, this ultra-thin and ultra-light notebook computer packs lots of power and includes a Dothan ULV Processor 1.1 GHz, 60GB hard disk drive, 512 MB of DDR memory, Instant ON Media Player - Portable DVD Player and full size keyboard. Utilizing new LED backlight technology the Libretto LCD screen requires half the power of a portable computer. Even with this small form factor, Toshiba delivers a full keyboard with the same key arrangement as an A4-size notebook PC. With a battery life of approximately 5.3 hours, Libretto U100 achieves both miniaturization and enhanced usability.

Great for students and professionals can enjoy DVD movies or CD music by connecting the detachable “Libretto DVD dock” with DVD super multi drive, and can playback both without booting the PC. The Libretto U100 series adopts the advanced image enhancing technologies, such as digital sharpness, interlace to progressive converter, color correction, de-blocking and de-ringing, that Toshiba first brought to market in its Qosmio AVPC, and delivers bright, detailed, natural images.

With additional security, the Libretto U100 is equipped with a Fingerprint Reader and Toshiba HDD protection which stops the hard drive from being read upon impact to avoid scratching and/or damage. The Libretto U100 has an SLP of $2,599.

Defining portable computing since 1985
Toshiba launched the “T1100,” the world’s first clamshell-type, fully-functional laptop PC in 1985. Since then, the company has stayed in the vanguard of the market by consistently promoting technology standardization and adopting state-of-the-art technologies ahead of others. Toshiba created the notebook PC market and drove its expansion with breakthroughs in world-first technologies, including 2.5-inch HDDs, nickel-metal-hydride batteries and color TFT LCDs. Today, these are all standard on notebook PCs. Through advances that demonstrated the power and potential of portable computing, Toshiba has led and promoted the dramatic expansion of the overall laptop market and today’s notebook PC market.

The last 20 years has seen applications of portable PC grow in range and diversity, especially with the emergence of the Internet. Today’s advanced capabilities and diverse potential inspired Toshiba to launch its category-dominating AV-PC, Qosmio, in August 2004.

Alongside the AV-PC, Toshiba is also strategically promoting “thin & light” PCs. Both the Portégé R200 and Libretto U100 are positioned as premium notebook PCs in the “thin & light” category. Toshiba has brought its diverse technologies to the pursuit of slimmer, lighter PCs and the delivery of enhanced security in sophisticated designs.
